Speed Golf – Not for the faint hearted

Speed Golf is also known as Extreme Golf, Fitness Golf and Hit and Run Golf and started in California in 1979 by runner Steve Scott. The game involves completing a round of golf in the lowest combination of strokes and time.

The players run between shots and only carry between 2-6 clubs on them. If you are not fit, this game is not for you.  A players score is calculated by adding minutes plus strokes, so a round of 80 played in 65 minutes and 20 seconds would get you a score of 145:20 . The best recorded score at this game  was shot by professional Christopher Smith in Chicago in 2005. He shot 65 in just 44:06 for a speed golf score of 109:06.

The rules and etiquette are pretty much the same as in normal golf. The players don’t have to take out the pole when putting, but they still need to rake bunkers, fix ball marks and be dressed in proper attire. Be prepared to run at least 5 miles on a normal 18 hole course.

If you love golf and hate going to the gym or doing any other activities, why not just take up Speed Golf. It will take some getting use to, but it is known that players that have converted over from normal golf, have shot the same or even improved their game by a few shots. And another great advantage of this, is that you can do 18 holes within an hour.

Extreme Golf is currently played in North America, Europe and Japan and major tournaments are telecast by channels such as ESPN and The Golf Channel.

I personally enjoy my few hours that I am out on the golf course, but I am definitely willing to give this game a shot. If you have tried it out, leave me some comments on how it was.

FRYS.com Open

So whats the big hype about this weekends FRYS.com Open? Tiger Woods of course. Everybody wants to know whether Fred Couples made the right choice for his Presidents Cup Team. I personally think everyone should give Tiger Woods a break. He’s had a tough 2 years mentally and if your heads not in the game, your game is going to suck. All golfers and wannabe golfers know it.

Everyone is devided on what they think about Tiger Woods right now. Some think he has lost it and he will never beat Jack Nicklaus’s Major victories, but I’m on the other side of the fence, I think that he will have no problem breaking that record and even get his Major victories up to 20. Tiger Woods grew up with golf, its in his blood. He’ll definitely do it, but he also needs to realise that the field is filled with a lot of Brilliant young players now and he’ll have to work double as hard.

There are a lot more big names in the field this weeeknd, which includes Ernie Els, Angel Cabrera, Paul Casey, Trevor Immelman, Justin Leonard and David Duval. With first place taking home $900k, you can be sure that it will be a great fight to the end.

The FRYS.com Open is one of four Fall Series events on the PGA tour. The other three include the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Kids Open, McGladrey Classic and the Childrens Miracle Network Classic. This tournament was established in 2007 and is held at the Corde Valle Golf course in San Martin, California.

The Fedex Cup and Tour Championship

Anyone who spent time watching the Tour Championship this weekend was definitely entertained all the way through, from the start to Bill Haas ‘s last putt. What an incredible end to the Fedex Cup… The players also had amazing weather conditions which contributed to a great weekend. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped out at East Lake.

The Tour Championship ended up with a playoff between Hunter Mahan and Bill Haas. And what a playoff it was…. They played an extra three holes before Bill Haas was crowned champion of the Tour Championship and the Fedex Cup.

On the second playoff hole Bill Haas pulled out a magic shot out of the water on the seventeenth. Its a definite must see. Go check it out on YouTube. It looked like it was an almost unplayable shot, but wow, he pulled it off to get the ball only a couple of feet away from the hole.

It was back to the eighteenth for both players, but unfortunately Hunter Mahan just couldn’t pull it off. Bill Haas took home an amazing $11.44 Million to make that his biggest payday in his career. He made more money in one tournament than what his dad, Jay Haas, made in his career. Thats just incredible.

Another interesting fact about both these  players are that they only have 5 PGA wins between the two of them. Great Championship guys!!!

Great Course for your Short Game – Smyrna, GA

Legacy Golf Links on Windy Hill Rd is a great course if you want to improve your short game. The longest fairway they have there is 291 yards if you are playing off the white and 320 yards if you are playing off the blue. The course is mostly par 3′s, with only four par 4′s.

The staff that work in the pro shop and on the course are super friendly and really make you feel welcome. You can also sign up with the club for free and everytime you go play, you’ll receive points towards, either a free game or free balls for the driving range. And another brilliant point about the driving range, which I find a great attraction, is that they have lights on the range till nine o’clock in the evening.

They offer quite a few other things, which include, Golf training by four PGA instructors, tournaments and outings and they also have night golf, which is hosted by a different company for business events and parties. With the night golf, you will be playing with a glow in the dark ball and you’ll find it quite a lot fun.

Legacy Golf Links also have a sister golf course right next door, which is called Atlanta Fox Creek Golf Club. This course is a bit bigger, with more par 4′s and even one par 5. The great thing about these two courses are the prices. If you want to play 18 holes after 2 at the Legacy Course for instance, you will be paying $21. They even have better prices for games starting after 5pm. Check out their site, http://www.legacyfoxcreek.com.

We all need to practice our short game, so why not practice here if you live in the area.

Cigarettes and Golf

Cigarettes and Golf

by ATG (http://atruegolfer.com) on August 8, 2011

The game and cigarettes have always had an interesting relationship. After reading Bernard Darwin’s essay titled The Golfing Cigarette, a post was warranted. Growing up, cigarettes were a part of my experience – the long drag remains in my father’s pre-shot routine.

In Darwin’s essay, he conveys 5 (of many) different types of cigarettes on the golf course. They are:

  1. “There is the one that a man lights on the tee just to steady him and help him over the first hole.”
  2. “There is the one, particularly applicable to medal rounds, which follows a disaster in a bunker leading to a six or a seven.”
  3. “There is, in a match, the one that is felt to be absolutely necessary when a nice little winning lead of three up or so has suddenly been reduced to a single hole.”
  4. “There is the cigarette to be smoked at the turn, irrespective of the state of the game, but because the turn is a definite occasion and an occasion calls for tobacco.”
  5. “Finally and most blissful is the dormy cigarette…”

Golf and cigarette’s relationship has been like any other; good times and bad times ebb and flow. In the early years of competitive golf, it was viewed as disrespectful to smoke in a match. Americans slowly morphed the perception as even the great Bobby Jones took a few drags during critical moments.

Unquestionably the pinnacle of golf and cigarette’s relationship was during the commercialized boom years of golf. The years of post-war golf seemed to curb the stigma and when the likes of Ben Hogan and others made it a habit, the act was more accepted; proven by the King’s promotion of LM’s (image below).

The relationship of cigarettes and golf today is still strong, but more subtle. Although, an opponent lighting up a Camel is in no sign of disrespect, it’s more likely to be perceived as a weakness. Vernacular has even changed. Smoking cigarettes, is no longer called smoking cigarettes, but ‘ripping nails’ is just as easily interpreted in the golfing elite’s terminology.

Cigarettes and golf will always be married together. Both need each other: cigarettes because without golf, there would be less moments needed for them, and golf, because without cigarettes, the game would be that much more difficult.

KLM Open

Today was the end of an exciting weekend at the KLM Open in Holland. Previous winner, Martin Kaymer failed to make the cut on Friday, but that didn’t put a damper on the weekend.

Simon Dyson reigned superior once again, for his third win at the KLM Open in six years. He didn’t have the best of days on day three with a round of 71, but won the tournament with a round of 66 on the final day, which ended him on -12.

David Lynn birdied the last hole, but just couldn’t catch up with Dyson and finished at -11. US Open champion, Rory McIlroy birdied a lucky shot at the 17th, but also couldn’t catch up with the leader and came in at third with -10.

Interesting fact, 7 out of the top 10 players at todays event were from the United Kingdom. Well done guys.

Omega European Masters

What an amazing week at the Omega European Masters. At the end of play today, only one could take the championship and it was Thomas Bjorn with an incredible final round of 62. That is two world class wins for him in two weeks. Thomas won the Johnny Walker Championship at Gleneagles last week.

Martin Kaymer scored a 65 on the last day and came in second, while US Open winner Rory McIlroy, South African, Jaco van Zyl and overnight leader Jamie Donaldson where tied for third.

Bjorn is now back in the world’s top 30 golfers and is in the lead for the Ryder Cup race, which started this week at Crans-sur-Sierra.

The PGA Tour Playoffs…..

The Playoffs started last week with a great win from Dustin Johnson that kept the lead in the last two days of “The Barclays”. Matt Kuchar came close to the win, but made some small errors on the last day of play. A few of the lucky ones to make it through to the Deutsche Bank Championship was legend, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, William McGirt and the biggest Barclays move that didn’t have a Deutsche Bank spot lined up was Camilo Villegas that moved from 125th to 51st. Also, Brandt Snedeker set a course record of 61 on Sunday, which was absolutely amazing.

This weekend is going to be action packed and a lot can happen, knowing the name of the game. The Deutsche Bank Championship starts tomorrow with a great line up. UsaProGolf has a few favourites, but it could be anyones game.

Good luck to everyone playing and enjoy it out there.

Nike 7 Wood!!!!

About three years ago my best friend bought me the most amazing club I have ever owned, a Nike 7 Wood. It didn’t matter how I hit the ball, it was so forgiving and every shot was briliant. I could do things with this club that I could only dream of.

I moved away for about a year and left my clubs with a friend of mine and when I returned to get my clubs, that specific club was broken. I couldn’t believe it. The only reason I went to get my clubs back was because of my 7 Wood. I was absolutely devastated. I kept my cool though and acted that everything was ok. Thanks for looking after my clubs Joe…….

Ever since then I’ve been searching for another 7 Wood and have had no luck in finding one. There was a Nike sales guy at the driving range the other day and I thought I would definitely be able to find out about where I could purchase another one, but he didn’t even know what I was talking about. He told me he has never heard of a Nike 7 Wood.

Can someone please let me know where I can purchase one? This will be a great help. And for those golfers out there that are looking for a club to add to their set of golf clubs, the Nike 7 Wood will be the best addition you’ll ever add. Its absolutely brilliant. Thanks Dan
